The Human Voice
| |
Among all the instruments that we use to make musical sound the human
voice is in a class by itself. Indeed, the highest goal for many other instruments is to
emulate the voice. It is unsurpassed in expressiveness, tonal variety and dynamic range.
The voice is our first instrument and we learn to use it from the moment we are born. The
almost infinite range of timbres that can be produced allows us to form words, not just
sounds, with our voices. It is both a poetic and a musical instrument. The voice is the
primary means of musical expression in all cultures across the world and throughout
history. Singing is a joyful act, stimulating and meaningful on every level.

Vocal instruction can unlock the power of the human voice to convey
the subtlest of emotions and the deepest of feelings. Our goals are to help our voice
students to achieve a beautiful sound, to clearly express words and melodies and to attain
good techniques that will ensure that their voices are not harmed or strained. The vocal
apparatus is complex, involving the lungs, the vocal chords, the mouth and the resonant
sinus chambers. Good vocal technique helps to make these elements work together for the
most powerful and beautiful sound. Students learn good posture and breathing techniques
to maintain and strengthen their voices. Simple melodies and exercises are used to expand
vocal range and flexibility and to ensure precise pitching in different vocal registers.
Students can work on conservatory repertoire, Broadway and Disney music, folk, Jazz and
Pop songs. Our emphasis is on good intonation and vocal production, rhythm, diction and
expression. Students may choose to participate in Royal Conservatory examinations or music
festival competitions. We encourage participation in musical theatre, choirs and other
ensembles and we prepare many students for auditions for school or community productions.
